Pearson

I'm reading a Lester B. Pearson bio right now, and am soon going to be spouting off random Pearson facts for the pleasure and edification of everyone I know.

Since this blog is listed on a couple of Guelph feeds, I'll treat you to a tidbit of local history. After returning from WWI and finishing his B.A at U of T, Pearson joined the Guelph Maple Leafs baseball team as an infielder.
I guess that team morphed into the Guelph Royals at some point. Their wikipedia page is difficult to understand. But I did find this amusing fact there: "In the summer of 1873, the Boston Red Stockings, the defending National Association champs, paid a visit to Guelph and whipped the Maple Leafs 27-8."

The Guelph Maple Leafs v. The Boston Red Stockings!

  2. Thank you for posting this - in my opinion Lester Pearson was the greatest PM we've ever had. Imagine all that his administration did with a minority Parliament: gave us pension programs, healthcare, student loans programs, and our flag! I feel sad thinking that we may never have an effective a government has his again.

  3. I hope that you are reading John English's biography. It is an excellent read. Lester Pearson's father was a minister at what is now the Norfolk United Church that is why he was involved with the Guelph baseball team.

  4. I'm reading Andrew Cohen's biography from Penguin's Extraordinary Canadians series. He makes reference to John English quite often.

That's interesting about Norfolk United! I'm sure I'll be busting out that fact in the future.
